NEAT – Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

WHAT IS THIS?

NEAT is all the extra ‘stuff’ you do and usually has more to do with burning the food you eat than the exercise you do at the gym!

Think about it this way –
(these numbers are rough estimates)

24 hours in a day
6 hours sleeping
8 hours working
2 hours eating
1 hour driving (to/from work/school/shops etc)
1 hour is spent doing dedicated exercise (most people wouldn’t even do this much I’m being generous!)
2 hours watching TV/checking phone/social media
That’s pretty much the full 24 hours accounted for, most of the above we spend sitting or laying not burning much fuel at all (unless you have a job where you are on your feet all day, if you are lucky enough to have that then you are ahead of most people!).

So incorporating more NEAT into our lives is super important – these little extras can make the world of difference in your weight loss journey!!

HOW DO WE GET MORE NEAT IN OUR LIFE???

- If you commute to work walk to the train/bus station or get off 1 station early and walk the rest of the way only 5 minutes a day is 1200 minutes a year! (based off working 5 days a week 48 weeks a year).
- When parking at the shops/school etc take a park further away from the doors – that extra 30 seconds of walking done even just twice a week gives you an extra hour of activity each year!
- When you are talking on the phone utilise our amazing technology that no longer restricts us to a corded phone and walk around!
- Move the office printer or bin so you have no choice but to get up every time you need to use it even if it’s just 10 steps away simply getting up out of your seat is good for you!

. - Take the stairs instead of the escalator!
- Housework is activity!
- When you are picking something up off the ground think about using the muscles you would use to squat don’t just bend at the hips it’ll use more muscles and save your lower back!

Getting in this little bit of extra activity everyday can be the difference you need!
You can easily burn an extra 300 calories everyday by doing these things!
It’s an easy change to make to everyday life…
